Hampshire Poet 2022

Hampshire Cultural Trust (HCT) is working in partnership with Winchester Poetry Festival (WPF) to deliver the 2022-2023 Hampshire Poet Laureate programme.

The Hampshire Poet programme has been running every two years since 2008; the position was last held by Kathryn Bevis in 2020.

The Programme

The position of Hampshire Poet – now a two-year tenure - provides the opportunity for a Hampshire based poet (resident in and/or working in the county) to write commissioned poems, lead workshops, give readings and talks throughout the county, and act as an advocate for poetry and poets.

Opportunities have been identified throughout the two-year period for the Hampshire Poet to play a significant role, providing the poet with the chance to create new work, engage members of the community and connect to programmes, events and celebrations across the county already taking place during the period.

Key opportunities could include:

  • A village hall tour of Hampshire poets

  • Workshops focused on wellbeing and/or youth engagement

  • Events and or commissions inspired by heritage sites and / or exhibitions

  • Participation in Heritage Open Days

  • ‘Hampshire Poet presents’ at Winchester Poetry festival 2023

  • Performance poetry events at HCT venues

 

The Role

The successful candidate will be a Hampshire based poet (including Southampton and Portsmouth) with the following experience:

  • A track record of publishing poetry in magazines, and/or online

  • Additionally or alternatively, a track record of performance poetry including film poetry

  • Experience of running poetry workshops and engaging with both experienced poets and beginners

  • Preferably with experience of working with young people or in community settings.

  • A willingness to collaborate with other artists and writers

  • A confident communicator

  • The poet must be able to travel throughout the county.

 

Fee

There will be a stipend of £4,000 for this role, which will include an agreed number of commissioned poems, activity and events. Additional activities may be agreed and funded separately.

Timetable

    Application deadline: Friday 12 November

    Interviews undertaken: Wednesday 15 December

    Tenure: January 2022 to December 2023
