John Keats Birthday Drinks
Keats-themed light supper & entertainment
Sadly this event has now been cancelled
Wednesday 30 October 6:15 – 7:30pm
Winchester Discovery Centre
As Winchester’s Keats’ season draws to a close, we at the Poetry Festival are inviting you to a special occasion to celebrate his momentous seven-week stay in the city. Keats’s poems and letters amply demonstrate his relish of good food – and company – and so we are holding an evening at the Discovery Centre with wine, food and poetic entertainment.
‘O, for a draught of vintage!’
On Wednesday 30 October, the eve of Keats’s birthday, we will be hosting a Keats-themed light supper, in cabaret style, from 6.15 – 7.30pm. The evening will be hosted by festival trustee Jon Sayers (known to audiences for his in-conversation pieces with Annie Freud and Jo Shapcott) and will feature a return visit from poets Julia Bird and Mike Sims, with a performance combining poetry, quizzes, nectarines and of course claret in the very city where his Autumn ode was composed.
‘Give me Books, fruit, french wine and fine weather
and a little music out of doors, played by somebody I do not know’
Tickets are £12.50 per head and you can book below. It promises to be a stimulating event and we very much hope to see you there.
‘While he from forth the closet brought a heap
Of candied apple, quince, and plum, and gourd’
John Keats the physician knew that he would die of tuberculosis, and his only, forlorn, hope of recovery was to exchange an English winter for an Italian spring. Nowadays we are fortunate enough to have hospices, and the evening will conclude with a voluntary collection towards the completion of the Winchester Hospice at Burrell House.
We are grateful to Shentons Solicitors and Mediators for their kind support towards this occasion.
