Nick Makoha

3.30 - 5.30pm

Metic Workshop:

with Nick Makoha

‘Metic’ = a foreigner or a resident alien, whose allegiances are split between their homeland and new country.

Join Nick Makoha for this workshop where you will look into the experience of black poets in the UK and US to investigate how these writers are differentiated from natives, and ask whether poetic writing can itself be a Metic practice.

This course is for anyone interested in exploring issues of identity, race, and migration. The workshop will also include writing prompts to help kickstart your creativity.

Bigger than Bravery

Brave and beautiful poetry to open this year’s Winchester Poetry Festival. Both Ray Antrobus and Jericho Brown are known for their stunning performances of their poetry. Raymond Antrobus won the Ted Hughes Award and he was shortlisted for the International Griffin Prize for his work The Perseverance. In 2019 Antrobus became the first poet to win the Rathbone Folio Prize for the best work of literature in any genre. He’s a champion poetry slammer and his work is frequently featured on BBC Radio. US poet Jericho Brown’s third book The Tradition was a PBS Choice in the UK. Brown has won numerous US awards, including the Whiting Writer’s Award, and he is associate professor and director of the Creative Writing Programme at Emory University.

Michael Rosen

Michael will perform some old favourites like 'No Breathing in Class' and 'Chocolate Cake'. As always, the audience will be able to ask him questions, so come prepared!

Michael Rosen is a poet,  children's novelist, and the author of 140 books including We're Going on a Bear Hunt. He served as Children's Laureate from June 2007 to June 2009. He has been a TV presenter and a political columnist.

Somewhere Else

8.30pm - 9.30pm

Both Ruth Fainlight and Kathryn Maris are US-born poets who have found a home in the UK. During this reading and discussion they’ll share their thoughts about crossing between the cultures and poetry scenes, and they’ll read from their own intensely striking work. Ruth Fainlight is an award-winning poet and translator whose collections have spanned five decades. Her New and Collected Poems (Bloodaxe, 2010) was described as a ‘monumental achievement’ by the Guardian. Kathryn Maris is a poet, critic and curator. A selection from Maris's third collection, The House With Only An Attic And A Basement (Penguin 2018), won the Ivan Juritz Prize for creative experiment. The Observer called her ‘a mistress of fragile structures.’
